How often should you groom your dog
Breed, coat type, and lifestyle determine grooming frequency. Here is a practical schedule for most dogs.

Short-coated breeds
Dogs with short, smooth coats like Beagles, Boxers, and Labradors typically need a bath every 6–8 weeks and a brush every 1–2 weeks. Their coats shed regularly but do not tangle easily.
Medium-coated breeds
Breeds like Golden Retrievers and Border Collies benefit from brushing every 3–7 days and professional grooming every 6–10 weeks. Their undercoat can mat if neglected.
Long-coated breeds
Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, and Afghan Hounds need brushing every 1–2 days and professional grooming every 4–6 weeks. Mats form quickly in long hair and can cause skin problems.
Double-coated breeds
Huskies, German Shepherds, and Malamutes shed heavily twice yearly. Daily brushing during shedding season helps; otherwise every 2–3 days. Baths every 8–12 weeks are usually sufficient.
Signs your dog needs grooming sooner
Visible mats, strong odor, overgrown nails, ear discharge, or difficulty walking on slippery floors from long fur between pads.
